Phyllostachys violascens
This is a collectors’ plant grown for the unusual colours displayed by the
new culms. They emerge very dark violet and mature to brown. In later years,
they become variously striped.
It has a spreading root system and potentially tall thick
canes up to a diameter of 3 inches (7.5cm)
Has tolerated -18C.
Suitable for sun or light shade.
A medium or tall species with some similarity to Phyllostachys iridescens.
Mainly used as a specimen plant but capable of forming an impressive grove or screen where space is available.
Height 6-8m but can be considerably more.
Appears very slow growing in pots and seems unlikely to be successful in containers.
Availability very limited.
The "Addingnton Form" is occasionally available.
